Who We Are

About abl.community

About Us

abl.community was developed by leaders at Care Design New York, one of the Care Coordination Organization/Health Homes (CCO/HH) certified by the New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).  The roots of abl.community are grounded in the efforts of individuals, families, care managers, and caregivers to help people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to connect to their community and fulfill the goals of their Life Plan. We understand the challenges faced in identifying resources that are inclusive and welcoming. This might include a barber shop that can accommodate a wheelchair, a dentist offering sedation for routine cleanings, and a museum with sensory-minded hours for those with autism). We are champions for choice!

The abl.community team consists of former government officials, doctors, social workers, professionals, self-advocates, family members, and other allies with deep experience in the developmental disability services community.

Our Vision:

  • Support individuals with IDD to succeed in the world on their own terms and participate – emotionally, socially, and economically – as active members of their community.
  • Create opportunities for social and community experiences for individuals with IDD of all ages.
  • Improve access to “whole person” resources for individuals with IDD and their circles of support (families, caregivers, friends, advocates, and others).
  • Promote knowledge and information sharing among the IDD community that is grounded in lived experiences.
  • Advocate for equity and inclusion by promoting the value of IDD-tailored services and supports to the community at large.
