Why we are

Why abl.community?

abl.community is designed to improve the access of people with IDD to those businesses and organizations that want to serve them.

Why abl.community

Life can be complex for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and those that support them.  Children and adults with IDD often struggle with identifying and accessing services and other resources that meet their needs. These resources can include professionals (health, behavioral, therapy, and legal) and services organizations, but also community and social groups, faith-based organizations, entertainment venues, travel agencies, technology companies, caregiver support resources, and other retail and consumer services.

At times, even after finding potential services there is no way of knowing if these are a good fit, if they include adequate accommodations, or if there are potential costs associated with participation. It is natural to reach out to those around us, with similar experiences, to ask for advice and recommendations. abl.community was created to be a place to start.

While there are sources and directories available on various websites and social media platforms, we could not find a general resource center for the broader IDD community. We put our heads together, with our hearts in the right place, to design a diverse tool catered to our community and businesses and organizations that wish to serve them. We do not seek to replace or compete with existing resources that you love, but rather to gather them in a centralized way to be shared widely.

We are listeners and believers.

We are sharers and connectors.

We are advocates and allies.

We are abl.community.
